Conny Groenewegen Tokyo AW 2013


As a part of ’’Fashion Exchange’’, a programme which invites overseas designers to showcase their work at Japan Fashion Week, Dutch fashion designer Conny Groenewegen presented a variety of exquisite color coordinated looks. And thus, another attractive fashion week began in Tokyo.
For the A/W2013 season, the designer opted for a multitude of all-black outfits, which exuded an aura of nonchalant elegance and sex appeal. Groenewegen’s seamstress skills and an impeccable sense of texture resulted in a feminine collection influenced by Japanese designers (particularly Yoshiki Hisinuma).
Sensual energy permeated through the whole line-up. Silhouettes were more relaxed because of the wider waist, while the area around the shoulder had extra volume. When it comes to the aforementioned textures, chiffon and cotton gauze were combined to create a romantic relief. The massive black leather coat that resembles a gummed bathrobe is most certainly one of the statement pieces, although its practicality in cold days is questionable. Midi skirts are a vision of a cocktail aesthetic and they are joined by longer proposals which slits and tails contribute to the moderate asymmetry. Many garments (especially those in softer white ensembles) were a true testament to designer’s innovative approach to knitwear and her recognizable technique which has as its core a computerized knitting machine that allows her to use different materials’ qualities when making one item of clothing.
Before the, rather unexpected, finale painted with bright red and coral, models paraded down the runway wearing striking lilac grey jumpsuits that bear an uncanny resemblance to the pineapple’s skin.
Conny Groenewegen established her namesake brand in 2006. With her A/W2012/13 collection named ’’Alchemy’’, the Dutch designer won the Mercedes-Benz Dutch Fashion Award in 2011. Her signature ’’soft-tech’’ concept, that consist of mixing modern technology with traditional handwork, has already proved itself to be unique in the fashion industry.
