The rather recent duo definitely lived up to its name with this years Spring collection shown at Paris Fashion Week. The inherited signature line of Thierry Mugler’s designs is not exactly easy to keep up with, however creative director Nicola Formichetti (also known for contributing to Lady Gaga’s extravagant outfits) and womanswear designer Sébastian Peigné created a fresh, sexy, Far East inspired collection, which still contained the traditional graphic “Thierry Mugler” lines but is at the same time is surprisingly wearable.
According to the creative director himself, the idea for this collection started out with one of his travels around the world where he drew his inspiration “from the humid buzz of Mexico City, the jungles of south east Asia and the artisanal savior faire of the Far East”.
As melodic as these words sound is the outcome: Light Kimono tops, slick pants in leather, dresses with boasting wide shoulders nipped at the waist and arousing skirts, some of which are shiny with horizontal pleats, dominated the collection. The most intriguing and desirable pieces of the show probably were the sculptural, tight dresses with the thin neckline forming the female body perfectly. While the dresses are tailored in a second skin manner, the tops and kimonos, often belted with taekwondo ribbons, are held loose and relaxed with super- mini shorts or skirts underneath.
Vivid, strong colors were chosen to play an important role in this collection ranging from sunset hues like yellow and orange to more seductive, earth tones like grape, jade and maroons. A nice feature on the side was the debut of the handbag line, consisting of clutches and boxy handheld bags in leather with bright colors perfectly completing the looks.
While still paying respect to the typical craftsmanship of the house, the designers focused on simple and wearable this time creating smart, carefully tailored pieces developing a style of their own for Mugler
